This week The Friendly Fires returned to NYC after their CMJ rounds back in October, one of which I was lucky enough to catch. As reported, the week started off with a DJ set at Le Royale on Monday and continued on Tuesday with a last minute in-store at Virgin Megastore and a headlining gig at The Annex on Tuesday night.
We did not make it to the DJ set but jetted over to the in-store on Tuesday, which considering their growing popularity, was surprisingly below capacity. The boys played a 4 song set then chatted with fans while graciously signing autographs. We talked to the boys about their CMJ gig and about their show that night, which
sparked a sense of excitement! Lead singer Ed MacFarlane gave us handfuls of open bar bracelets, which definitely came in handy later.
Quite enjoyably, Brooklyn-based Lemonade opened the show with their layered, thumping, reverb sound. Lemonade is a less jarring and more bearable Animal Collective to me. After their set, Friendly Fires' Edd Gibson tapped me on the way to the bar and we discussed how much we liked Lemonade's set...seriously they really are friendly!
Friendly Fires took the stage and as usual put on a great show. Ed's ability to engage the crowd is undeniable and you can really tell they give their all in a live performance. It was great to catch their live set this time after becoming so familiar with the record (if you don't have it, get it) and I can't wait for the next time they're in town. Check Friendly Fires tonight at their sold out gig in London's Koko.
